Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović Is Getting Mistaken For A Model

The World Cup has been full of subplots, but none have been quite as strange as the one involving Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.

The 50-year-old stateswoman won hearts across the globe when she donned a Croatia shirt and celebrated wildly during their quarter-final victory over Russia.

Who is Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović?

She’s attracted many admirers in the last week or so, but also ended up going viral for an unenviable reason. After their win against Russia, alleged photos of Grabar-Kitarović in a bikini were being circulated, and they damn nearly broke the internet…

Croatian President in a bikini? It’s fake news

Fans were fawning over the photos, but they hadn’t exactly done their research. The woman on the beach is actually Coco Austin, an American glamour model. In fact, this isn’t the first time this has happened.

Since she was elected in 2015, the pictures – originally taken in 2009 – have done the rounds on social media. This week presented an opportunity for them to take flight again and boy, people sure went ahead and believed what they wanted to believe.

Unfortunately, she’s also been the subject of a fake news campaign. Grabar-Kitarović was alleged by a Serbian tabloid of starring in a porn film ten years ago. Like most rumours based on the president’s appearance, it was a false story.

Quick reminder guys, this is the year 2018.

The Croatian president rounded off a successful week by playing her part in the NATO summit and watching her nation reach their first ever World Cup final. Unfortunately for England fans, that last part isn’t fake news.
