“We’ll rehabilitate him and get him back whenever we can. Who knows when that will be,” Nets coach Steve Nash said before Tuesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans. “But we’ll support James and support our performance team in getting him back in best condition as possible. Hopefully that comes sooner rather than later, but there’s no guarantee.”

a group of people sitting in a chair talking on a cell phone: Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden talks on the bench with Kevin Durant during an April 10 game. © Brad Penner, USA TODAY Sports Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden talks on the bench with Kevin Durant during an April 10 game.

Entering Tuesday, Harden had missed the past six games after playing only four minutes against the New York Knicks on April 5. Since then, Harden had traveled with the Nets this week for games in Miami, New Orleans and Tampa to complete 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 workouts. The Nets had liked Harden’s progress until Monday’s workout.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

“He just felt it. He didn’t stumble or fall or anything out of the ordinary,” Nash said. “He just felt something maybe in the ballpark of a strain. Just a setback and then the scan revealed he had suffered a setback. So not much more to it other than just disappointment, and that we have to rebuild and get him going again."

Although the Nets (38-19) trail the Philadelphia 76ers (39-18) by one game for first place in the Eastern Conference, Harden’s injury opens up potential concerns on the team’s health and chemistry with only 15 regular-season games remaining. Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have played only seven combined games together while missing a combined 56 games due to injuries, the league’s health and safety protocols, rest or personal reasons. The Nets also lost LaMarcus Aldridge, who announced his retirement last week after he was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat after a recent game.

After Durant missed Sunday’s game because of a left thigh contusion, Nash listed him as “day-to-day” and added that “we’re hopeful that he can be back soon.”

As for Harden?

“James will be back when he’s back,” Nash said. “We have no control over that other than working as hard as we can and support him in getting back to full health. We’re prepared for whatever that may be.”
